Mamma M’s Movie Club

This is not a club specific to moms and I can’t guarantee that any of the movies we’ll watch will be kid-friendly. I’m calling it “Mamma M’s” because it was my nickname for about seven minutes in my twenties during my short-lived career as a sort of “madame” one summer. If you read my book, Naked, then you already know. Plus, I am technically a mom and I like the ring of it.

Anyways, now that we’ve cleared that up, WELCOME TO MY MOVIE CLUB! I’m super excited to be doing this because I love movies. All movies. High-brow, low-brow, all of it. It’s ultimately where I want to end up in my career–as an independent filmmaker and screenwriter (I’m currently working on a screenplay and a grant to make a movie). Fun fact! I wrote my first spec when I was eleven for the third Terminator. Yeah, I liked the movies so much that I really needed them to make another one and I was too impatient for someone else to write the goddamn thing. Kids, right? Or should I say, kids who were raised in the eighties and allowed to watch Terminator while practically still a fetus?

How to Join

First things first, take a quick second and fill out the form below. That way I can keep you updated on the movie schedule, chats, relevant posts, and movie fun. I’m too lazy to send spam emails so don’t worry about getting a bunch of non-relevant crap.

Processing…
Success! You're on the list.

What You Can Expect From Movie Club

Every month I will create a blog post for all of the upcoming movies we will watch (and you can find links to the months below). We will watch one movie every other week, skip whatever you want, or watch them all, it’s up to you, and we will chat about it. Don’t feel pressured to sound like a film critic. I’m not a film expert. Hell, I have degrees in English, Sociology, and Art and I’m not an expert in any of those things either. Although I am an expert in student debt. You’re welcome, government. I wish I had attended film school though. As I was saying, I’ll be posting the calendar here, watch the movie at your own leisure and come ready to chat, laugh, scowl, and have a glass of wine or not. If you want to know what kind of person I am before joining my movie club, check out this post here on my fave films.

How Movies Are Picked

I’m pulling the films from a few different master lists, like Sundance winners, BBC’s Best Films of All Time, the AFA’s Best Ever List, Best Foreign Films, Best Black Films, Etc, Best, Bestie, Best. And I’ll be talking about movies that are not “list-worthy” but are good, fun, or popular right now. This isn’t one of those stuffy pretentious clubs. You can expect to see a lot of diversity in the calendar. The only genre we will not be watching is horror. I’m sorry, I have friends who love horror and even a very good friend who was in Halloween (I love you), but I fucking hate scary movies (except for Scary Movie for obvious reasons). My brain is a scary, scary place, and the last thing I need is more terrifying up in here. If you love horror and are disappointed (you weirdo), I can direct you to a good horror list and you can add any/all of those to your personal lineup.

How to Analyze Film

If you’d like to improve your movie critique skills, this short article on How to Analyze Film gives a great jumping-off point. Again, you don’t need to sound like a film expert but if it’s just something you’re into, check it out. But no pressure. Don’t expect me to sound like a pro. I’m not and I don’t.

Invite Friends, Tag, Share

Part of the reason I’m doing this is that I love film and I love watching movies. The other reason is that I love community. Please feel free to invite friends, and tag pics of yourself watching the movies with #mammasmovieclub on Insta or wherever. It just makes it a little more fun when everyone feels like they’re a part of something and right now we all need that. You can also download Letterboxd and add me M_Movie_Club.
